ICYMI: DEI+ in the Culture War Cross Hairs

A slide image summarizing the DEI+ outlook for 2024

Diversity, equity, and inclusion have been in the spotlight recently, with critics of DEI+ programs and initiatives finding an outsized voice for their messaging. The work that DEI practitioners know is good for business has been captured by culture warriors determined to reverse recent progress to make workplaces that work better for everyone. With so much focus on DEI and against the backdrop of a presidential election and economic uncertainties, those who lead these efforts must stay informed and clear-headed to advise their organizations effectively.

In the January 2024 DEI Leader Network (DLN) Live Event, Managing Partners of Diversity Works, Denise Rosemond and Holly Wittenberg, offered a roadmap for navigating the complexities of DEI + in 2024. In case you missed it, you can watch the presentation here.

The following insights were offered as guiding principles for DEI practitioners to navigate their ongoing efforts.

DEI+ in the Culture Crosshairs.

Diversity Works Managing Partner Holly Wittenberg set the stage with a contextual overview for DEI+ in 2024. As the presidential election stirs the public discourse, DEI+ initiatives are thrust into the cultural crosshairs. This year, with political tensions at a peak, DEI+ programs face rigorous examination from both the media and political entities. The scrutiny has intensified, as DEI+ practices and policies are dissected and debated in a highly charged environment, making the work of DEI practitioners more vital yet more challenging than ever.

DEI+ as a Business Positive.

Denise Rosemond, Managing Partner at Diversity Works, emphasized the significant positive influence of DEI+ on business performance. Denise pointed out the necessity of revising communication strategies to more effectively demonstrate DEI+’s alignment with and contribution to business objectives and organizational success. She also stressed the critical role of DEI+ in enhancing business resilience and fostering innovation, marking it as an essential factor that sets businesses apart, especially during challenging times.

Anchoring DEI+ in Resilient Strategies.

Ending on a positive note, Denise and Holly emphasized the continuous benefit of DEI+ initiatives on the performance of business. By revisiting and refining communication strategies, organizations can more effectively demonstrate DEI+’s alignment with business objectives and its contribution to organizational success. Furthermore, Denise and Holly encouraged DEI practitioners to communicate DEI+ as an essential component for fostering business resilience and driving innovation, especially crucial in times of adversity. This perspective positions DEI+ as a vital differentiator for businesses striving to navigate through challenging environments.

DIVERSITY WORKS EXCHANGE

The Diversity Works Exchange (DWX) is a learning collaborative that helps organizations set goals and improve performance around workplace diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). Our approach provides comparably situated, like-minded employers with a safe space to learn from DEI experts and interact with peers who are facing or are successfully addressing similar challenges.

The DWX is designed to help organizations improve across a wide range of DEI competencies, but each cohort selects its own priorities. Diversity Works creates a custom curriculum for each cohort and facilitates the learning process through a combination of online or in-person convenings, interactive webinars, and one-on-one coaching. We create a private, unlisted LinkedIn group for each cohort that allows participants to engage their peers and DEI experts at any time during their DWX term and beyond.

DEI LEADER NETWORK

The DEI Leader Network is a free resource for DEI professionals. We created the network because DEI leaders often feel isolated in their role and benefit from networking with their peers. To join the DEI Leader Network, please get in touch.
