Last week, Diversity Works managing partner Holly Wittenberg introduced the DEI Leader Network to our approach to DEI benchmarking. This work is essential to understanding your organization’s DEI performance and helping you set strategic priorities, from enhancing organizational reputation to attracting and retaining talent to setting goals for leadership diversity. In case you missed the live event, you can view the recording here.
Showcasing various types of data available via public sources, Holly’s presentation covered how data can be used quantitatively or qualitatively to deliver actionable insights. Quantitative data include workforce composition numbers that are available from the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) and turnover rates that are available from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Qualitative data include comparisons of different organizations’ DEI commitments and benefits packages. While data point is perfect, collecting a range of different data helps you understand and communicate the competitive landscape.
The presentation used a case study of grocery stores to demonstrate how Diversity Works conducts its DEI benchmarking. By comparing Kroger to two of its competitors – Costco and Albertson’s – participants could see the strengths and weaknesses of the different organizations when it comes to DEI performance. These strengths and weaknesses can be interpreted to understand the organizations’ commitment to DEI.
Diversity Works prepared a Tipsheet about Making the Case for a Workforce Composition Benchmark to help you make the case for investing in a DEI benchmark exercise. We believe they are an essential component of your practice that can help leaders understand the business case for DEI.
Join us on July 20th at 1:00 PM ET for our next live event, Attracting, Hiring and Retaining Employees with Disabilities, which will explore how to create a more inclusive work environment for people with disabilities. Despite a strong labor market, the labor force participation rate for individuals with disabilities is less than 33%. This represents a significant source of untapped talent and is a stark reminder that we do not have a truly inclusive economy. You can register for the live event here.
